Major storm here Tuesday night

Filed under: — Bif Powell @ 9:54 pm

Check out some pics of the storm damage in the western Minneapolis suburbs. Pretty impressive winds.

Some downed trees

Downed willows

This last one is hilarious - we pulled up to him and asked if he could cut our trees and he just made a sour face and yelled back “I can’t help you!” He was holding the phone with his shoulder, driving with his knees and writing addresses on a pad. Look at all the notes on his dashboard. Of course AAron’s would be first in the yellow pages ;)

Needless to say, the tree service people made a killing.

My CPU v. Warcry EQII Flash Ads

Worst theft of my CPU cycles and bandwidth EVAR! Avoid at all costs until they take them down (or edit your hosts file or remove Flash, etc…). Check how much CPU it’s using to do that.

Memory and HD for the Behemoth

As mentioned in the podcast for this week, I now have the rest of the specs for the Behemoth - my not-so-budget conscious PC.

Seagate 120GB HD
Going to pickup 3x120GB HD and use the nForce4 RAID controller to do a RAID array.

2x512MB RAM
Also putting in 2x512MB matched pair of RAM for 1GB total. Should be alright for starters, but 1GB is hardly a lot these days.

Various World of Warcraft Videos (and one from Steve Ballmer selling Windows 1.0)

As promised in the GotS podcast of Jan. 25th 2005 here are some World of Warcraft Videos put together by a couple of WoW groups.

The first is a recruiting video from The Dark Sentinels of Mooncrotch server (or whatever).
The Dark Sentinels Recruiting Video

The second is an excellent Girls of the Alliance Dance Video. Excellent video showing a few of the racial dances and featuring the sultry succubus side-kick.

The last one I only talked about briefly is an entertaining ad for Windows 1.0 starring none other than Internet Billionaire Steve Ballmer - Just how does Lotus 1-2-3 relate to Miami Vice?

Motherboards be damned!

It’s looking like a ~$250 mobo is going to be a reality for at least a couple months - so here are The Behemoth specs as they stand currently on NewEgg

  • GIGABYTE “GA-K8NXP-SLI” NVIDIA nForce4 SLI Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU
  • ASUS nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 256-Bit, TV-Out/DVI, PCI-Express, Model “EN6800/TD/256″
  • AMD Athlon 64 3500+, Socket 939, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor
  • I’m about 2 weeks away from ordering, so I’m still taking suggestions.

    The Behemoth’s mobo

I’m in this for the long-haul so I’m mostly interested in an nForce4 SLI board. As such, they are a little expensive and the choice way too limited to really decide on which one to get. So I’m moving off to pick a processor.

As mentioned in our podcast for this week, I’ll be building a new gaming PC so please email your parts lists or suggestions on building this box to streetmail@gameonthestreet.com.

Let’s try and keep it under $2k or so, which should still make a nice box since I’ll be using my current monitor, HDs, keyboard, mouse, etc…

That or I’ll just get an Area 51.

    10 Slots!

Fuu and I were talking in the podcast about how many character slots were available. It’s 10! 10 per server! Right now I’m just looking to hook up with a good group of people online. I’m on the Durotan server…if you know of a good group, post a link please, thanks!

    Dimebag

    1966-2004

By now everyone has heard that “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott was brutally murdered in a Cleveland nightclub Dec 9th. Dimebag was an amazing talent and, as I’ve found out only too late for it to matter, an amazing person as well. When it was first released I picked up Far Beyond Driven while in the college bookstore - I was on a ‘pick-the-random-cd-case-up-and-buy-it’ kick then, and found mostly lumps of coal; interspersed with flawless diamonds. I rode my mountain bike everywhere and “5 Minutes Alone” was blaring in my headphones one afternoon coming back from class. It’s just an amazing song - I always described Dimebag’s sound as ‘crunchy’ and I think this song demonstrates that by not only his technical skill, but more importantly his amazing natural talent. From his creative mind, out to his fingers, then stored digitally and reconstructed by my CD player, through the headphones and mainlined into my mind, Dimebag and I connected. Although it was one-way communication, and he derived no psychic reward from me directly, he gladly filled the pipeline with all the passion and fury I could handle. When the solo started I got a shot of adrenaline and took my bike down a path in the woods I had never been through because it normally looked too steep, full of jumps, and tight chicanes. As the solo crescendos, Dimebag shakes the notes in a vibrato that has more soul than any one note should have. I choose this moment to launch myself from a small vertical drop and for a brief moment I was there with Darrell, helping hold and hang on to that note as long as we could. Then I went end-over-end in a pretty bad spill as the deep nuclear explosion goes off in the song. I lay there, stunned more by Dimebag than the crash, and looked up at the tree-branches. All I could say was, “Wow".

When my friend left voice-mail telling me what happened, I was just in disbelief until I could see it on the news for myself. Ever since then I’ve been listening to my Pantera collection, watching the new Pantera DVD and in general trying to channel Dimebag in some small way. I can’t help but think that the best was yet-to-come for Dimebag and what a horrible senseless tragedy this is. I guess we should be grateful that he was willing share that talent and now I can take him with me everywhere I go.

RIP Dimebag - and Thank You!

MTV Coverage with a nice history. MTV still sucks.

Apologies on GotS No. 4 12-07-2004

I’ve been very pressed for time lately, due to some work changes that are happening for me, so we didn’t really get to do any preparation for the show this week. I promise we’ll be back to ourselves next week and over the holidays for sure. Thanks for listening!

Correction for the Nov 22 Podcast

In our hardware segment, there are several times when Fuu and I are talking about lapping the heatsink, attaching the heatsink, and general heatsink chat. A few times I call it a heatsink-fan and that’s just out of habit - usually they come as a pair, the heatsink and the fan and I just refer to them as the HSF. Also I mention that the CPU isn’t totally smooth - obviously I meant the heatsink. I can be dumb, but in this case I just mispoke.

    World of Warcraft Raid Primer

Blizzard’s site has a lot of WoW content up currently, coinciding with the release of World of Warcraft on Tuesday.

In this context ‘raids’ are basically any organized attack on what they call ‘raid monsters’ - the intention is that as gamers reach very high levels, they have epic undertakings available to them and their guilds.

Raids could be singular attacks against a huge Fire-Elemental or longer, raids done in stages as you progress to the tougher creatures. They’ve also tried to have raids that have a large dungeon-crawl component lasting hours and even days to clear one out. Many of the raids are instanced, meaning private playground areas that only allow the raid-party members to enter. The raids that aren’t instanced are meant to have server-wide implications - succeeding in a particular raid might open up new zones that all players can get to once the raid-creature is defeated by the resident bad-asses.

One of the raid-creatures they talk about a lot is Onyxia, a huge dragon that will take like 40 max level players to bring down. She can bite, scratch, tail-whip, and fly.

    Episode III footage

It’s hard to tell if this is in any way official…I think it’s the standard deal of some theforce.net zealots got some clips from ET and put them into what is being passed around as a teaser/trailer. Anyways, some good tittilation for the Star Wars optimist, of which I am. Enjoy.

    Apple’s new iPod Photo

Cool new iPod. We all pretty much knew it was coming with the leaks from color screen developers, HD manufacturers, etc…

I have to admit that I’m dissapointed though, as I was really hoping the rumors were only half-true and Apple was going to release an iPDA - can you imagine the iPod as it is now, but with TRUE PDA capabilities - color touch-screen, BT, Wifi, camera, etc…? A 60GB PDA would be killer and probably dominate the PDA market - in fact, the tin-foil hat side of me thought that HP’s really odd move of licensing the iPod as the HP iPod, was part of some strategy to jointly release a predecessor to the iPAQ.
